A High Quality, Fashion Forward Consignment Shop
Eden Prairie’s Encore Boutique is home to an eclectic assortment of new and expertly consigned clothing and accessories. The store first opened in 1988, moving to its current location not long after Kay Nordbye purchased it from the previous owner in the mid-2000s.
Encore consigns everything from Target to Chanel, as long as the pieces are on trend and in like new condition. But, what makes Encore unique is their inventory. Along with local customers, they carry clothing from all over the country. Customers from Ohio, Wisconsin, and even New York ship their clothing and accessories to the store for consignment. It’s common to see clothing from Milan and London hanging next to items from Target and Von Maur. To complete your outfit, Encore also carries a small number of new items, such as leggings, scarves, and jewelry.
In the center of the store is an eye-catching display of designer handbags. With the increasing popularity of recycling and vintage clothing, Nordbye sees some of the stigma around consignment shopping slowly starting to fade. “Over the holidays, we sold a lot of designer purses and watches from Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, and Tory Burch to be given as gifts. Five years ago, that would have been unheard of.”
With the store selling close to one thousand items per week, the consigned pieces don’t generally last for very long. Seasoned customers have learned if they like something, they need to grab it before it’s gone. Nordbye shares the story of a woman in labor who called a friend to rush over to the store and buy a top she was eyeing. She knew it would be gone if she waited until after giving birth. She now brings her toddler to the store. As an added bonus, Encore has a rewards program where customers earn points every time they shop.
While Nordbye loves clothing, it’s the people that make her day feel like anything but work. She shares story after story of memorable customers who experience life’s highs and lows within the walls of the store. She says, “Eden Prairie is such a wonderful place. I could write a book about the great people who come in here.”
Every staff member at Encore takes great pleasure in making personal connections with customers while taking the time to learn their likes and dislikes. They also love helping customers step outside their comfort zone. Nordbye says, “Each person has their own taste and will gravitate towards the same colors or silhouettes. It’s exciting to encourage them to shake things up. Many customers come back to the store and tell us how many compliments they received about the outfit we helped them put together.”
Nordbye says one of the most rewarding things about being a local business owner is giving back to the community. Every few months, they gather items that did not sell and hold a charity rack sale. Everything is priced at $5 or less with the proceeds going to their charity fund. Encore Boutique donates money to local school events and programs, The PROP Shop, and women’s shelters.
